PAUL HAWKINS

Paul Hawkins aka Bob Modem works mainly in poetry, visual art, performance & has co-run, been co-editor at Hesterglock Press with Sarer Scotthorne since 2013. Paul has written a number of books, some collaborative, some not. His most recent is Go Sift Omen (Knives Forks and Spoons Press, 2019).  Alec Newman’s Knives Forks and Spoons Press will also be publishing Eachwhat Vol. 1, a collection of poem brut  to coincide with a visual art & poetry exhibition at North Shore (just south of Bispham tram station), part of The Blackpool Illuminations 2020. They’re also involved in a sound/film/performance collaborative project with Patrick Cosgrove, they’re collaborating with artist Steve Ryan on an experimental graphic novel and on a longer-term translation project with writer Martin Wakefield.

They came to writing more seriously in the 21st century, grateful that anyone cared enough to publish their work, listen to it, look at it, read it, criticise it etc. If pushed, they might describe themselves as an experimental poet, performer, artist & publisher. Maybe.

They consider themselves from a working-class background; don't have a trust fund, a credit card or any other more middle-class access to capital. Over the past 10 years or so, they've mainly been doing the dishes, staying clean, writing, co-running music/sound workshops, facilitating creative writing workshops, curating events, supporting SJ Fowler’s Poem Brut project(s), co-running Hesterglock Press, publishing, exhibiting & performing. They also run intruductory courses for Second Step (Bristol) on Making Picture Poems, as well as longer 6 week Poem Brut courses.

They've performed their work in many places, including the WOMAD Festival, The Royal Opera House, Rich Mix London, The Shelley Theatre, The Hardy Tree Gallery, Boscombe Fringe Festival, Rough Trade Records Bristol, Resonance FM, The Bristol Poetry Festival, The Horse Hospital, Ars Poetica International Poetry Festival (Bratislava), SIX Gallery, Arnolfini Centre for Contemporary Arts, Bristol Sanctum, Stoke Newington Literary Festival, Brighton Fringe Festival, National Poetry Library, Gato Vadio Bookshop/Artspace in Porto, Portugal, at Speech Therapy, Spike Island, Bank Street Arts, The Museum of Futures & many other venues. Their artwork has been exhibited in galleries in Sheffield, Bournemouth, Bristol & London.
